Music at the Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart parish has a long tradition of excellent liturgical music, dating back to the opening of the church in 1887. For further information, including music lists, a detailed history of music and the famous organ of the Sacred Heart, please visit http://www.sacredheartmusic.co.uk .

There are three groups which support the liturgy at three Masses on a Sunday, and all are keen to welcome new members:

  • The children's choir sings at the 10.00 am Family Mass. Children attending the Mass are invited to come forward and sing, led by a cantor, professional soprano Rachel Marshall. The music group is led from the piano, our lovely Steinway, rather than the organ. The music is a mix of traditional hymns, newer hymns and settings composed by our own musicians. The piano accompaniment is supported by a number of instrumentalists.
Please feel free to talk to Rachel after Mass or email family@marshallemail.net if  your child would like to join the choir.
If you or your child are interested in joining the instrumental group please contact Giles Kennedy on 020 8543 3307 .
  • The main church choir sings each Sunday at the 12.00 Mass, as well as the major feasts of Christmas and Easter. The first Sunday of each month is a fully-sung Latin Mass; all other Sundays feature congregational hymns and psalms, as well as mostly congregational settings of the Mass parts. The repertoire covers the wonderful legacy of Catholic liturgical music from Gregorian Chant to the present day, but music from the Anglican tradition is also used when appropriate. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings (7.30-9.30) and at 10.45 on the Sunday morning.

If you are interested in joining the choir (experience desirable but not essential), please contact Robert Rathbone, the Director of Music at robert.rathbone@mac.com and/or 01372 841442.

  • The choir at the Sunday 5.00pm Mass supports the liturgy with music from the contemporary liturgical repertoire, including Vineyard and composers such as Matt Redman.
Rehearsals are on Friday evenings at 8.30 and Sundays at 4.00.
